Special Master/Discovery Referee
Joe Ramsey has been selected to serve and has served in approximately 70 cases in either or both capacities as Special Master and Discovery Referee. The cases have been venued in Sacramento and most surrounding regional counties.
In 1997, Joe Ramsey began to serve with some regularity as a Special Master and/or Discovery Referee in (mostly) complex multiparty construction defect litigation and other business and real estate litigation. He is sometimes referred this work by Judges of regional Superior Courts but has mostly been selected by the parties.
Service as a Special Master has consisted primarily of working with the parties to fashion and manage time and cost efficient voluntary exchanges of information as well as dealing with formal discovery and related disputes. As a trial lawyer, Joe Ramsey was privileged to organize and try to verdict a number of extraordinarily complex, lengthy, and otherwise challenging trials, some involving thousands of documents and scores of witnesses, including many expert witnesses in a wide variety of disciplines. He brings that experience to the organization and management of complex multi-party cases.
Service as a Discovery Referee has included hearing and deciding (primarily discovery) disputes, usually subject to de novo review by the Superior Court of the County where the action is venued.
